Class of 1965  Stan Hibbs

Academic:

Stan Hibbs grew up in Sarasota and graduated from Riverview High School in 1965. During his years in high school, he was inducted into the National Honor Society and was a member of Student Congress and the Letterman’s Club.

 

In 1969, Dr. Hibbs received his B.A. in Psychology at Florida State University.  In 1971, he received his M.A. in Psychology at the University of South Florida and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Georgia State University in 1977.

 

Professional:

Dr. Hibbs is an accomplished psychologist, consultant, public speaker, and author. Post high school graduation, and prior to earning his doctorate, Stan taught high school in Merritt Island, Florida as well as serving a guidance counselor. His practice in psychology has traversed the state of Georgia. Highlights of his career include:

  • College Professor at Kennesaw Junior College, Kennesaw, GA as well as at George State University, Mercer University in Atlanta, and Oglethorpe University (1976-1977).
  • Child & Adolescent Program Coordinator for South Cobb-Douglas Mental Health Center in Marietta, GA (1977-1979). Additional responsibilities included the supervision of a girls’ group home.
  • Psychologist, Adolescent Program, Clayton Mental Health Center, Riverdale, GA where he provided individual, family and group therapy for adolescents and their families. He worked with schools, DFCS, and juvenile court (1979-1981).
  • Program Psychologist, Adolescent Care Unit, Atlanta, GA where he worked with inpatient drug and alcohol treatment program for teens and alcohol education for parents (1981-1983).
  • Consultant, Adult Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program, Clayton Mental Health Center, Riverdale, GA where he provided consultation for day treatment programs and co-led therapy groups (1983-1985).
  • Psychologist in Private Practice, Sandy Springs, GA where he provided a wide range of outpatient treatment services to children, adolescents, and adults as well as psychiatric hospitals. He was also involved with the evaluation of children in the Diabetes Clinic at Scottish Rite Children’s Medical Center (1983-1995).
  • Psychologist at Alpha Care Mental Health Associates in Atlanta, GA which was a full-time clinical practice in a non-denominal Christian counseling center. In addition to supervising interns and staff members, he appeared regularly on a daily radio program called “Marriage & Family Today” (1995-1999).
  • National Seminar Leader, PESI, presenting seminars on “Anxiety: Treatments That Really Work” where he traveled to three cities every month for day-long seminars (2010-2015).
  • Psychologist in Private Practice: The Atlanta Network for Individual and Family Therapy in Dunwoody, GA where he provides a wide range of services to clients. In addition, he conducts workshops, presentations and is invited for public speaking engagements (1999-2019).

 

Dr. Hibbs has published three books:

Personal:

Dr. Hibbs devotes considerable time to his profession, speaking engagements, volunteering at his church, and writing books. In his free time, he likes to study philosophy and comparative religions, practice yoga, and is an avid sports fan; particularly the FSU Seminoles, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, and Atlanta University.  Stan is interested in and supports environmental protection efforts and climate change. He is very interested in astronomy, astrophysics, and space exploration. He is very interested in politics and current events.

 

Charitable:

Dr. Hibbs volunteers his non-working time to various professional and community endeavors. He has served on the Georgia Psychological Association Board of Directors, Membership Committee, Insurance & Managed Care Committee, Chair of the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychology and voted a Fellow in 2002. A variety of community involvement include volunteering for Chamblee First United Methodist Church on the Staff-Parish Committee, Finance Committee, and as an Adult Sunday School Teacher. At the Dunwoody United Methodist Church is has served on the Environmental Stewardship Committee and regularly participates in Foodstock which provides meals for people in developing countries world-wide.
